The Natural & Recreational Resources Commission (NRRC) is issuing a public update following routine structural inspections of shark exclusion net infrastructure servicing coastal areas near Del Perro Pier and segments of the Vespucci Beach Boardwalk.

Inspection Findings

During scheduled assessments, NRRC marine infrastructure teams identified localized structural fatigue and tension irregularities in select portions of the shark net arrays, specifically:

  • Western piling zones adjacent to Del Perro Pier
  • Mid-boardwalk tidal transition sectors along Vespucci Beach

These findings were identified through standard preventative inspection protocols. No confirmed breach of the exclusion systems has occurred.

Nature of Observed Wear

The identified areas reflect common coastal stress factors, including:

  • Cable tension imbalance associated with cumulative vessel wake rebound
  • Increased wear at anchoring points in high shoreline-traffic sectors
  • Sediment displacement affecting lower ballast stabilization zones

Such conditions are consistent with seasonal current variation, longshore sand migration, and elevated marine traffic activity.

Current Status & Mitigation Measures

At this time:

  • Recreational beach access remains open
  • No active public safety hazard has been confirmed
  • Supplemental ballast reinforcement is being deployed in sediment-shift areas
  • Hydrodynamic monitoring operations have been increased
  • Inspection frequency has been elevated during peak vessel traffic and tourism periods

NRRC will continue ongoing reinforcement and monitoring operations to ensure structural integrity is maintained until full replacement or upgrade operations are scheduled.

Public Guidance

Beach visitors are encouraged to:

  • Observe all posted coastal advisories
  • Avoid climbing or interfering with net infrastructure
  • Report visible structural irregularities or unusual marine activity to lifeguards or contact NRRC via 311

NRRC remains committed to proactive coastal asset management, environmental monitoring, and public safety transparency. Updates will be provided should conditions materially change.
